This is more than just a pass-the-test
course. It is a complete knowledge base
for full comprehension of the Private
Pilot Certificate.
If you want to learn to fly, then take
this course.
If you already have your private certificate,
then take this course for an excellent
review.
Be the safest pilot you can be.
If you have been flying for years but
have not kept up with the continuing and
changing education, then take this
course.
If you want to pass the FAA written
Private Pilot Exam, take this course
1. Get your student pilot certificate (and a medical
exam for a Private certificate).
2. Meet the citizenship requirements by presenting
a passport or a birth certificate. NONCitizens
must register with the TSA. Go to
www.flightschoolcandidates.gov.
3. Be 17 years old and read write and speak English
fluently. Training can begin at an earlier
age.
4. Fly the required hours of training.
A Required Flight Training for The Private Pilot
Certificate.
1. Minimum of 40 hours of flight training (US average
is 70 hours), including 20 hours of dual
instruction including: 3 hours of cross-country
flight to airports more than 50 miles away, 3
hours of flight solely by reference to instruments,
3 hours of night flight, including a 100
nautical mile round trip and 10 night takeoffs
and landings, 3 hours of instruction within 60
days prior to your practical test. 10 hours of
solo flight including : 5 hours of cross-country,
including a 150 nautical mile round trip, 3 takeoffs
and landing at an airfield with a control
tower. You must also receive ground instruction
from your instructor (logged) on over a
dozen topics specified by the FAA. This is in
addition to any study you'd do in preparation
for the knowledge test.
B. Required Flight Training for the Sport Pilot
Certificate..
1. Minimum of 20 hours of flight training, including
15 hours of dual instruction including: 3
Hours of cross-country flight to airports more
than 50 miles away, 10 takeoffs and landings
to a full stop, 3 hours of instruction within 60
days prior to your practical test. 5 hours of
solo flight including: 1 solo cross-country flight
of at least 75 nautical miles total distance.
Note that Sport Pilot are restricted from carrying
more than one passenger and from flying
at night. They also cannot fly above 10,000
feet or in visibility of less than 3 miles. Sport
pilots can only fly LSA compliant aircraft.
5. Do sufficient study to pass the FAA’s multiplechoice
knowledge test with a score of 70% or
better. 60 multiple-choice questions from the
FAA’s databank of about 700 questions. The
sport pilot test has 40 questions.. You can prepare
for this test with a home study course,
however a ground school class is much more
fun and informational.
6. Take a practical flight test (called a
“checkride”) with an FAA-designated examiner.
The final step for sport and private pilot.
The standards for the checkride are defined by
the FAA practical test standard (PTS). You can
buy or download the PTS for both certificates.
Check rides include an oral exam and a flight
test .
.
What will it cost?
It depends on how quickly you learn and how
much time you can devote on a daily / weekly basis.
The more often you train, the less time you will
spend training. The average is between $7,000-
$9,000 to get your private certificate and about
25% less to get your sport certificate. Ultimately,
the issue is not what it costs but what it’s worth to
you. Pilots sometimes justify the cost of flight training
by explaining how “practical” it is, or how it will
save travel time or money. While that can be true,
most people learn to fly for the same reason they
choose any sport hobby or activity. It is FUN!
How long will it take?
If you fly once a week it probably will take 11-12
months, twice a week 4-5 months, 3-4 times a
week 90 days. Some people learn faster than others.
How do I get started?
Take a discovery flight. If you like it, then join
Foothill Flying Club and interview with some instructors.
Choose what certificate (private or sport)
you are training for and choose the type of aircraft
you wish to fly. Buy a few supplies and study materials.
Enroll in Ground School or begin a home
study course. Then you just do it!
